Speculative scenario. Not a forecast. At 09:00, you fork into five simultaneous versions. All five remember waking up in the same body. One goes to work. One cares for your family. One starts a company. One enters a simulation to train for ten subjective years. One disappears. At 23:59, four return to merge. Each says it is the original. Each remembers choosing the others. None remembers what the others did next. The fifth refuses to come back.
- Five versions complete five jobs, but the payroll system recognizes one employee. Does each fork earn a wage, do they split one salary, or does the legal “original” own all five lives' labour?
- The forks begin with shared memory and then diverge. Private conversations, promises and trauma belong to one branch until a merge forces them into every survivor.
- One instance commits a crime. The others had the same childhood, motives and access credentials but did not choose the act. Police arrest the biological original because the state has only one legal name.
- A fork refuses deletion and claims a right to continue. The person who created it calls it a temporary process. The fork calls that murder.
- After a merge, the resulting person remembers making mutually exclusive choices and keeping incompatible promises. Continuity survives technically but may fail psychologically.
- The biological original dies before synchronization. Four digital versions remain, each carrying yesterday's memories. The family must decide whether a person died, multiplied, or merely lost one body.
- A backup is restored after the funeral. It remembers being alive, not dying. If it inherits the estate, death becomes an outage; if it does not, a conscious copy wakes up legally disowned from its own life.
- A person's memories, dispositions and active cognitive state can be instantiated with enough fidelity to create a serious continuity claim.
- AI can sustain each fork as an adaptive agent rather than a static imitation.
- BCI or another interface can transfer new memories and intentions between biological and digital instances.
- Forks can remain simultaneous, embodied and economically productive for meaningful periods.
- Merge operations can combine divergent experience without simply deleting one participant.
- A persistent substrate for addressable cognitive instances
- Memory provenance that records which fork experienced what
- Conflict-aware merging that can preserve disagreement rather than overwrite it
- Legal identity for forks, copies and merged persons
- Rules for wages, property, consent, inheritance and criminal liability across branches
- Security against unauthorized copying, editing, rollback and deletion
- Subjective continuity may require a living biological process and may not survive copying.
- A convincing copy may be a new person, making “merge” a euphemism for deletion plus reconstruction.
- Divergent memories may be impossible to integrate without severe incoherence or trauma.
- Compute, energy, latency or embodiment costs may prevent persistent simultaneous forks.
- Law or culture may prohibit person-copying even if it becomes technically possible.
- Provider control, lock-in or compromise may make forked identity too dangerous to adopt.
